Death Valley, one of the driest places on Earth, has recently seen a remarkable transformation, as an ancient Ice Age lake reappeared following record-breaking rainfall. Lake Manly, which hasn’t been a permanent feature for over 10,000 years, has partially refilled in the wake of intense storms that have flooded the region.

This event is particularly striking given that Death Valley typically receives less than two inches of rain a year. The amount of rainfall between September and November 2023, totaling 2.41 inches (6.12 cm), exceeded the usual annual precipitation in just a few months. According to the National Park Service (NPS), this heavy rain not only brought the long-dormant lake back to life but also raised important questions about the impact of climate change and its influence on the region’s already volatile weather.

Unprecedented Rainfall in Death Valley

In recent months, Death Valley National Park has experienced an unprecedented amount of rainfall. Between September and November 2023, the area received a total of 2.41 inches (6.12 cm) of rain, breaking records for the region. While this might seem like a modest amount compared to other parts of the world, it is a significant event in a place where annual rainfall averages less than two inches. November alone saw 1.76 inches (4.47 cm) of rain, surpassing the previous record of 1.7 inches for the month. The surge in rainfall was so intense that many of the park’s roads were rendered impassable due to storm debris.

The unusual rainfall has caused shifts in the park’s landscape, with the reappearance of Lake Manly being the most visible sign of this change. The lake, which once stretched across nearly 100 miles (161 kilometers) of terrain, had been absent from the region since the end of the last Ice Age. For the National Park Service, these record rainfalls have prompted concerns about how future storms might affect the region’s unique ecosystem, including the famous wildflowers that bloom in the spring.

Lake Manly’s Brief Resurgence

Lake Manly is no stranger to reappearing after periods of heavy rainfall, but its return this year is particularly significant. As stated by the NPS, while the lake’s current size is not substantial enough for activities like boating, it’s still an important reminder of the region’s ancient past. During its peak, Lake Manly could have reached depths of 300 meters (1,000 feet) and covered vast areas of Death Valley.

Though the lake has reappeared several times in the past, including after Hurricane Hilary in 2023, its current size is small. In most places, the water would only rise to the tops of a person’s shoes. However, the mere fact that the lake has resurfaced after such a long period highlights how conditions in this arid region can shift, if only temporarily.
